Who You Are:
The Satellite Telecommunications Payload Digital Electronics Engineer will bring extensive expertise in the architecture, specification, design, development, qualification, and in-orbit validation of digital electronic equipment for satellite telecommunications payloads.
The role requires in-depth knowledge of digital hardware, FPGA and ASIC technologies, embedded software, and on-board digital processing architectures. Working closely with satellite and system engineering teams, equipment suppliers, industrial partners, and space agencies, the engineer will oversee digital payload equipment throughout its complete lifecycle—from requirements definition and technical specification through design, assembly, integration, testing, acceptance, and in-orbit operation.
The engineer will provide technical leadership during supplier reviews, design and test activities, and anomaly investigations, ensuring that equipment performance, reliability, and interfaces remain aligned with mission, payload, and spacecraft-level requirements.
What You’ll Do:
- Provide senior-level expertise in the architecture and design of digital telecommunications payload equipment, including digital hardware, FPGA, ASIC, embedded software, and on-board digital processing technologies.
- Develop, refine, and maintain technical specifications and equipment requirements in line with payload, spacecraft, system, and mission objectives.
- Oversee the complete lifecycle of digital telecommunications payload equipment, including specification, design, development, manufacturing, assembly, integration, verification, qualification, acceptance, and in-orbit validation.
- Monitor equipment suppliers and industrial partners, ensuring that technical solutions, development plans, design documentation, analyses, and test activities comply with contractual and programme requirements.
- Support the procurement and technical management of satellite and payload equipment, including the preparation and assessment of requests for proposals, statements of work, compliance matrices, and technical evaluation reports.
- Evaluate technical proposals from equipment manufacturers, with particular focus on architecture, performance, interfaces, implementation maturity, development risk, reliability, and compliance with system requirements.
- Assess the feasibility, performance, and effectiveness of digital payload technologies and processing architectures in meeting technical and operational requirements.
- Review hardware, FPGA, ASIC, and embedded software designs to ensure appropriate implementation, verification, reliability, and compatibility with the overall payload and spacecraft architecture.
- Represent Eutelsat Group in technical meetings, supplier reviews, design reviews, qualification reviews, test readiness reviews, acceptance reviews, and programme-level engineering forums.
- Work closely with satellite prime contractors, payload and system engineering teams, equipment manufacturers, and space agencies such as ESA, UKSA, and CNES.
- Support payload and satellite assembly, integration, and test activities, including equipment-level and system-level test campaigns.
- Analyse equipment performance and test results, identify non-conformances or technical risks, and coordinate corrective actions with suppliers and internal stakeholders.
- Support the investigation and resolution of anomalies identified during development, integration, testing, commissioning, or in-orbit operation.
- Collaborate with satellite operations and engineering teams to resolve in-orbit anomalies and ensure reliable payload performance throughout the mission lifetime.
- Facilitate effective coordination between digital electronics, RF, software, payload, spacecraft, operations, and programme teams.
- Stay up to date with advances in digital payload architectures, on-board processing, FPGA and ASIC technologies, embedded systems, simulation tools, and emerging satellite communications technologies.
- Identify areas requiring technical or programme-level attention and provide clear, regular updates and recommendations to management.
What it Takes:
- A university degree in Electrical Engineering or a closely related discipline. A Master’s degree or PhD in a relevant specialisation is preferred.
- 10-15 years of professional experience in space digital electronics engineering, including the design, development, qualification, testing, and in-orbit validation of satellite electronic equipment.
- Extensive expertise in digital hardware, FPGA, ASIC, and embedded software technologies.
- Strong knowledge of on-board digital processors and digital telecommunications payload architectures.
- Proven experience across the full lifecycle of satellite or payload equipment, from requirements definition and specification through design, development, integration, qualification, acceptance, and in-orbit operation.
- Proven ability to conduct or support technical proposal evaluations, supplier reviews, design reviews, test reviews, and equipment acceptance activities.
- Experience working closely with satellite, payload, and system engineering teams.
- Proven experience collaborating with space agencies and institutional stakeholders, including organisations such as ESA, UKSA, and CNES.
- Strong understanding of space equipment development standards, verification processes, reliability requirements, and qualification methodologies.
- Experience investigating and resolving complex equipment, system integration, test, or in-orbit anomalies.
- Strong communication, coordination, and teamwork skills, with the ability to operate effectively across multidisciplinary and multicultural organisations.
- Ability to communicate complex technical subjects clearly to engineering teams, suppliers, programme stakeholders, and management.
- Fluent written and spoken English. Knowledge of French would be an advantage.
- Willingness and ability to travel regularly for supplier reviews, technical meetings, design reviews, and test campaigns.
