Who You Are :

Eutelsat develops satellite video services, satellite communication services and related telecommunication infrastructures. Eutelsat has been historically a Geostationary (GEO) satellite operator. OneWeb, a UK based company, has been deploying a global constellation of satellites dedicated to connectivity at 1200km altitude (LEO constellation). In September 2023, Eutelsat merged with OneWeb and became the first Global operator having multi-orbit capabilities, LEO & GEO.

While the first generation of OneWeb LEO satellites-based system is becoming commercially available worldwide, Eutelsat-OneWeb is already preparing the next generation for which one key decision has been to adopt the 5G NTN standard from 3GPP. This next generation will be developed in a stepwise approach, with the first step expected to be operational in 2028. This first step should pave the way towards a constellation of interconnected satellites, each of them playing the role of a BTS, kind of “BTS in the sky”. 

In parallel, Eutelsat intends to leverage their LEO and GEO assets by offering LEO/GEO connectivity services while migrating also the GEO satcom networks and services to 5G NTN as well.

Several initiatives exist to connect objects or smart phones with 3GPP Release 17 (using narrowband spectrum below 6GHz) and Eutelsat-OneWeb ambition is to be the first satellite operator to provide broadband coverage with the 5G standard based on 3GPP Release 18 or 19, using the Ku band spectrum.

To support that ambition, Eutelsat-Oneweb is looking for experts who will re-enforce our Engineering organization.

The current OneWeb Gen1 LEO system is based on 4G technology, whereas Eutelsat GEO satellites are based on DVB technology. The candidate will integrate a team of experts which objective is to architect the migration to 5G and proactively prepare inputs to be championed in the 5G NTN WG. He will be supported by and work in cooperation with both satellite and telecom experts within Engineering organization. The candidate will bring his 5G expertise and apply it to a new domain which is 5G by satellite, in particular for the introduction of a 5G Core and the interfacing with all the BSS & OSS tools from Eutelsat-OneWeb.

The position is within the Chief Engineering Office organization, more precisely the Telecom System Development Department in charge of the evolution of Telecom systems for future LEO & GEO satellites.

What You'll Do :

• Define the roadmap of the evolution of the Eutelsat core networks towards 5G for LEO and GEO

• Architect the 5G core network of the next generation systems (LEO, GEO and LEO/GEO)

• Prepare the technical specifications for the 5G Core Network of Eutelsat future satellite systems.

• Perform scouting of potential suppliers and their product offerings

• Negotiate with suppliers the right engineering tradeoffs.

• Provide support to the other departments in Eutelsat as a 5G Subject Matter Expert.

The candidate may have to travel in France or outside of France.

What it takes : 

• Master's degree in Telecommunications, options in radio communications is a plus 

• At least 5 years of experience in 5G Core Network Architecture, either with an operator or manufacturer

• Expertise in 5G network architecture, in particular the Core Network

• 5G Product development experience or at least good knowlegde 

• Familiarity with 5G standardization is a plus

• Expertise in MEF is a plus

• Understanding of the satellite industry is a plus 

• Understanding of the 5G RAN is a plus 

• Knowlegde of OSS/ BSS is a plus 

• Fluent in English
